Wavefront Lasik Surgery Question
Q. I am severely nearsighted with a small amount of astigmatism. My contacts are -8 and -10. Would I qualify for the wavefront lasik surgery?
A. Wavefront-guided laser vision correction is the most effective and precise method available for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Today’s VISX S4 wavefront-guided laser is the only excimer laser approved to treat your degree of prescription. It is FDA-approved for treatments up to -11.50 diopters of nearsightedness, +3.0 diopters of farsightedness and 3.0 diopters of astigmatism. FDA studies reported that 98% of VISX Wavefront-guided patients achieved 20/20 or better distance vision. Many factors, in addition to prescription, go into determining whether a specific patient is a good candidate for laser vision correction and whether LASIK (where a corneal flap is made) or LASEK/PRK (surface laser treatment) is the most appropriate and safest treatment recommendation. I recommend you schedule a free evaluation with your optometrist or an experienced laser vision surgeon to determine if you are a good candidate and to understand all your options.
