DOH asks hospitals to suspend use of salt solution during glaucoma surgery and laser eye surgery
The Department of Health, (Taiwan), announced that it has asked all hospitals to stop using Cytosol Laboratories Inc.'s balanced salt solution when performing eye surgery due to dangerous levels of endotoxin.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration Monday requested that Cytosol Laboratories Inc. recall all types of BSS from the market, saying that the product contains elevated levels of endotoxin - substances found in bacteria.
The DOH said that according to statistics, about 13,000 bottles of Cytosol's have been imported.
The head of the ophthalmology department at Shutien Clinic, Wang Sih-hung, said that BSS is used to wash eyes during operations on cataracts, retinas, and is also used in glaucoma surgery and laser eye surgery.
