Laser Eye Surgery For Rally Driver
RALLY drivers will go to almost any length to gain even a split second advantage. But Phillip Morrow is taking it to extremes.
The rising young Ulster star, who has just become the beneficiary of a new Dream Drive award, is to have laser surgery on his eyes to improve his night vision.
"On night stages I sometimes have trouble gauging distances and picking out objects, like rocks, on the periphery of my vision," says Morrow, a member of Britain's elite young driver panel.
"So I went to see Gail Stephenson, the head of Liverpool University's Orthoptics Department who has worked with the Subaru and Mitsubishi World championship teams.
"She was able to identify the problem and recommended laser surgery.
"So I'm booked in to have the treatment in Manchester - only trouble is, it's just three days before the start of the Circuit of Ireland!
"I'm told it takes just 24 to 48 hours for the eyes to fully recover after the treatment so hopefully everything will be OK. There was just no other time it could be fitted in because April is going to mental."
